Change is Good

After much consideration, I have decided to switch up my blog a bit; though I've liked using Blogger, Wordpress has caught my eye and I am officially changing over!

With a new outlet comes a new name: Keeping Composure. I was inspired by a quote by photographer Matt Hardy: "Beauty can be seen in all things; seeing and composing the beauty is what separates the snapshot from the photograph."

Please visit my new blog at: www.keepingcomposure.wordpress.com. There is plenty more to come!

A Sunday Stroll to Rainbow Lake

After the half-day trek from Copper Mountain to Frisco on Saturday, I decided on a shorter hike to take on Sunday. The walk to Rainbow Lake from Frisco was perfect - it was easy, for which my legs were very thankful. I think I walked away with more mud on me than was on just my shoes!!

Happy Tails...

Emily and her poodle, Ollie were great companions for the beginning of the Tenmile Canyon Trail from Copper. I couldn't ask for a better dog and a more beautiful woman to share the walk with!

Summer Has Arrived!

Saturday was a beautiful, perfect summer day in the mountains! The first thought that came to me when I woke up was, "I have to go on a walk today!" So I started down Tenmile Canyon Trail, and ended up walking the 5+ miles from Copper to Frisco. Well worth the trek!

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

Having found some extra down time during May in Summit County, I found myself on an extended vacation back home to St. Louis, Missouri. Talk about a difference in weather! Cold, rainy days turned into humid and hot - very hot! If the sun was out, so was I, camera in tow. I made my way to some of my favorite spots in the city...

The St. Louis Art Museum: The cultural heart of Forest Park, this museum is home to some unforgettable art. The building is currently undergoing a grand expansion of over 200,000 sq. ft.

The Jewel Box in Forest Park: This magnificent greenhouse that dates back to the 1930's is now home to tons of receptions, events and weddings.

The Hanley House on Westmoreland Avenue: Beginning in the 1850's, this was home to the Hanley family for over 100 years. The family donated four acres of their land to what would become the city of Clayton, my hometown. The house has stayed in its original state, down to the furnishings inside. An icon on our neighborhood street, this house holds a special place in my childhood.

The Laumeier Sculpture Park: There's hardly another place in St. Louis that I'd rather be on a warm, sunny day. Sculptures scatter the +100 acres of the park, and the summer months bring plenty of popular events and new exhibitions.

Blackburn Park in Webster Groves: Another personal favorite, Blackburn was outdoor home during school. It's complete with baseball fields, tennis courts, arched pavillions and trails that the entire community enjoys.

The World's Fair Pavillion: Quite possibly one of the most impressive structures in Forest Park, this pavillion is a venue unlike any other. The open air and dramatic arches provide a picturesque backdrop to any wedding or reception.

Webster University's Emerson Library: This dramatic building holds inside it beauty, books and brains of hard-working Gorloks. Standing on one side of the open quad, the library's five floors hold a cyber cafe, conference rooms, study rooms, computer labs and endless seating options for that perfect all-night cram session.

Copper Family Portraits

I met the Shelley family while working at Copper this winter, and had so much fun shooting them in and around Center Village. It was a perfect winter day at the mountain - though there was a slight chill in the air, the snow was falling and they were happy to take a break from skiing all day.

It's easy to get some great shots and have a blast when the family I shot was so sweet. They had that familiar, midwest, inviting attitude. And even though Luke was really cold, I still got some great smiles and images from him too!

We ran out on the frozen pond, instigated some snowball fights and dodged the snowflakes as it dumped more and more. The shoot was spontaneous (really, I helped them at work and we decided to do the shoot two days later!) and loads of fun.

Lunch Break

I had a longer lunch break yesterday at Copper, and decided to get the camera out and take a walk. This is where I work (in the back of the Copper Sports Center):

Center Village at Copper is my home 5 out of 7 days a week (and when I decide to ride, that makes 6 days!). This year's been a great year - we've already doubled the amount of snow that fell during the entire season last year. I could do without as many brutally-cold days, though.

To the right of the Eagle lift lies the gigantic super pipe, a great place to people-watch (though you won't see me going through the pipe anytime soon). West lake freezes over in the winter, and Chubs (read: best sandwich joint ever!) rents out ice skates to guests looking for a new skating experience.

It's days like these that I feel pretty darn lucky to live and work where I do.
